Getting sailors to stay in the navy when faced with seemingly endless six month stints on the high seas is becoming more difficult. It's a particular problem with sailors possessing rare technical skills. To address the problems, the navy is offering cash bonuses for sailors who will either reenlist or accept additional long tours at sea. Last year, 230 sailors received $900,000 in bonuses under this program. The other services have used such bonuses successfully in the past, particularly to keep experienced pilots and medical doctors. The navy plans to expand the bonus program if it is successful. Such bonuses are common in commercial operations where it is hard to get the right people to serve in out of the way or unpleasant locations and jobs.
