Short of lieutenants, the Army has ordered its Officer Candidates School (OCS) to increase its classes and commission 1,452 new basic branch lieutenants this year. Hundreds of sergeants and civilians are being screened for possible enrollment in the course. Soldiers must be 19 to 29 and have at least 90 hours of college. Civilians must have a bachelor's degree and be between 19 and 29. All must score high on the physical and mental tests and pass a security screening. The college requirement is necessary because officers cannot be promoted to Captain without a bachelor's degree and without at least 90 hours they couldn't complete a degree in time.--Stephen V Cole
