WEN HO LEE DENIED BAIL: After two days of testimony, Federal District Judge James Parker refused to release accused scientist Wen Ho Lee on bail, citing concerns over damage to the US by his previous activities. The judge specifically noted the unknown fate of the seven missing computer tapes, and suggested a second round of lie detector tests to determine if Lee was telling the truth when he swore he had destroyed them. Lee insists that he made the tapes to review at home, not to give them to a foreign government, and destroyed them when he lost his security clearance. It was against the law to make the tapes, let alone to remove them from the laboratory. The FBI said it would not agree to release Lee on bail until it had physical evidence that the tapes were destroyed. --Stephen V Cole
