Short of Green Berets before the War on Terrorism, the Army is taking several steps to deal with the matter. Green Berets are not currently allowed to leave the Army without special permission. New recruits are being selected directly for the Green Berets just as they are for Armor, Artillery, or Engineers. Soldiers who have been in the Army only a few months can apply to join the Green Berets. A new course is being taught at Fort Bragg to prepare recruits who have completed infantry and airborne training for the tough Green Beret course. Most controversial, the Special Warfare School is trying to find ways to lower its attrition rate (only one-third pass the course) without lowering standards.--Stephen V Cole
