Russia has begun destruction of the silos for its mammoth SS-18 Satan (RS-20) heavy intercontinental ballistic missiles. Each of these huge missiles carried 10 warheads plus decoys, and could have been refitted to carry even more. The SS-18 force was a continuing cause of concern for US arms treaty negotiators.--Stephen V Cole
