Under a new Pentagon plan to reinforce the airborne jammer fleet, each service would follow its own path. The Navy clearly wants the F-18G Growler as its defense suppression aircraft of choice. The Air Force, however, has a more radical plan. It wants to fit existing B-52H, B-1B, and B-2A bombers with airborne jamming equipment. These planes would then penetrate enemy air space, drop tons of bombs, and then remain over the enemy for three or four hours, providing jamming services for tactical fighters. The B-2 is considered the best for the mission, but with only 21 planes in the inventory it is doubted that any could be spared for this mission. --Stephen V Cole
