Egypt will upgrade its six E-2C Hawkeye airborne early warning and control aircraft. The radar, computers, and work stations will be upgraded, improving interoperability with US forces. Some of the upgrade components will come directly from the Hawkeye-2000 program; the US Navy will not receive its first Hawkeye 2000 until Oct 2001. The new APS-145 radar will provide a 40% increase in range and tracking ability over the APX-138 now in the Egyptian aircraft. Modernization will be carried out in Egypt starting in 2002. --Stephen V Cole
