A Swedish health study recently estimated that the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster has caused over 800 Swedes in northern Sweden to develop cancer. Much of the radioactivity released by the damaged Chernobyl reactor disaster two decades ago ended up way up north (because of weather and wind patterns.) One aftereffect of this was the eagerness of Nordic countries to either shut down rickety Soviet era nuclear power plants, or, failing that, help improve their operation and security. Along those lines, Norway recently gave Lithuania 21 new RBS-70 anti-aircraft missile launchers, a supply of missiles and five Giraffe IV radars and fire control equipment. The gift was made with the understanding that some of the missile systems would be used to provide additional security for Lithuanias Ingalina nuclear power plant.
