Noting that severely wounded troops can be saved only by prompt and extensive medical care, the U.S. Marines are buying 14 portable operating room units. The Forward Resuscitative Surgical Systems (FRSS) cost $330,000 each and are carried in a five ton truck and two humvees. They can also be flown in by helicopter or aircraft. The system consists of two shelters that can be quickly erected. The FRSS contains its own oxygen generator and is wired for electricity (from a generator) and has a ventilation system. One shelter is an operating room, the other is a preparation and post-operation room. The FRSS is designed to be set up as close to the fighting as possible. With severely injured Marines, every minute counts, and the FRSS is there to take advantage of that. One FRSS has been delivered, with the rest arriving this year.
