The Army is expected to reverse its decision to cancel the Wolverine bridge vehicle, a move originally made to find money for the new "medium brigade" project. The original plan called for 127 Wolverines with 465 Heavy Assault Bridges. Formal cancellation orders have yet to reach General Dynamics Land Systems. As the five-year Wolverine buy was linked to a five-year buy of 307 M1A2S tanks, cancellation of the Wolverines will increase the cost of the tanks. Wolverine is built on an M1 chassis and can keep up with the M1 tank. It carries a 26m German-designed bridge which can carry the Military Load Class 70 M1A2. The old Armored Vehicle Launched Bridge, designed 40 years ago, cannot keep up with the M1 fleet and its 19m bridge is only barely able to carry M1A2 tanks.--Stephen V Cole
