The UN needs 8,500 police for various peacekeeping missions. These include 4,718 needed for Kosovo, 2,057 for Bosnia, 1,640 for East Timor, and more for Tadjikistan, Guatemala, Cyprus, and Africa. The problem is that various nations have provided only 5,122 qualified police, meaning another 3,300+ are needed. The UN is offering up to $100,000 for US policemen for the Balkans and finding few takers. Hundreds of policemen have been sent home because they were not qualified. --Stephen V Cole
