Artillery: December 18, 1999

The US Army has decided to fund a test of the German SMART-155 artillery shell. This shell is self-guiding (fire-and-forget) with multiple sensors for use in counter-battery and anti-tank strikes. This shell does essentially the same job as the SADARM (Sense and Destroy Armor) weapon built in the US, but the Army is not happy with the reliability of SADARM and is funding the competing German system for an eventual head-to-head test.--Stephen V Cole
