The Kharkiv-based Malyshev plant announced on 6 February that it was drawing up a new three-year, $100-120 million contract with Pakistan for 285 Al-Khalid MBT engine-and-transmission sets. The Al-Khalid MBT is a Chinese, Pakistani and Ukrainian joint project. The Ukrainians also plan to help upgrade the Pakistani T-59 (Al-Zarar) tank, in cooperation with China and Pakistan. Malyshev intends to ship 300 more engine-and-transmission power packs in 2002-2003, with an ultimate goal of 1,300 for the Pakistani Army. - Adam Geibel
