The Marines plan to send their Pioneer recon drones to Afghanistan to backup the Predator and Global Hawk aircraft already in use. Pioneer will be the only "tactical" UAV in use. The Marines wanted to replace the ancient Pioneer with a new vertical-take-off system, but that (Firescout) was cancelled. They may have to buy Army Shadow-200s until a new VTOL system can be designed.--Stephen V Cole
