The Japanese Defense Agency has selected the AH-64D Apache to replace the 88 old AH-1S helicopters now in service. The Apache won over the AH-1Z due to a lower life cycle cost; the Eurocopter Tiger was eliminated from the competition because it was too light for the Army's needs. The original plan to buy 90 helicopters may be limited to 60 by budget restrictions.--Stephen V Cole
