April 25, 2006: The British Royal Navy is upgrading 16 Phalanx anti-missile gun systems on its ships, to the 1B standard. Each system will cost $3.6 million to upgrade. This will enable the Phalanx to deal with more effective anti-ship missiles developed, or upgraded, in the last decade. The upgrade will also enable the new RAM (Rolling Airframe Missiles) systems, that are being installed in ships, to work with the Phalanx radar and fire control systems, to provide longer range (7,000 meter) anti-missile protection. The Phalanx gun is only good out to about 2,000 meters.
