by Douglas Scott, Lawrence Babits, and Charles Haecker, eds.

Washington: Potomac Books, 2009. Pp. ix, 450. Illus., maps, diagr., notes, biblio., index. $24.95 paper. ISBN:1597972762

This work is both a handbook to battlefield archaeology and a series of case studies of the results of battlefield evacuatrions. The sites included range from the search for the Varus battlefield in Germany from 9 B.C., a particularly impressive piece of work, through the evacuation of a battle site in Korea from 1950.

Various essays discuss procedures, such as "Finding Battery Positions at Wilson 's Creek", or analytical techniques, as in "What the Musket Ball Can Tell".  Others give detailed accounts of excavations, such as "Pointe du Hoc, Normandy " and "The Confederate Cantonment at Evanston,Virginia".
A valuable book for the professional military historian.
